Quit Playing Games with My Heart How to Choose Your Target Schools, feat. Wisdom from the Backstreet Boys TKG

Quit Playing Games with My Heart How to Choose Your Target Schools, feat. Wisdom from the Backstreet Boys To state the obvious, we often think of target schools as being that beautiful sweet spot between so-called “reaches” and “safeties.” While target schools are a crucial component towards achieving matriculation success, they’re a little more semi-sweet than totally milk chocolate.   In fact, what you need to know is that target schools are not a guarantee. At all. While the whole college process can, at times, feel like nothing but a heartache, we’ve come up with a strategy to help you develop your target list.Don’t Be Two Worlds ApartWhen identifying a target school, you should consider focusing on schools for which your scores fall into the 50th percentile of accepted students.  For our average student, this is going to be a mid-tier school, like the University of Michigan.Eons ago, back when CDs were a thing and kids still knew who Nick Carter was, applying to target schools was pretty easy.   Nowadays, with every passing year, it is only getting harder and harder t o get in. While we hate playing games with your heart, we do want our students to manage their expectations. So, to be clear, do not expect to get into your target schoolsâ€"especially if your target school has under a 30% acceptance rate. The One Desire Is a ShamSo, how should you narrow down that list of target schools in which you might not even get accepted? First of all, we recommend against picking a school just because it’s highly ranked. Approach this process like someone who is picky about the kind of music they listen to. If you don’t like brass, you’re not going to buy the latest Trombone Shorty LP just because it’s supposed to be great. Similarly, if you’re introverted, Michigan is not for you, even though it is a great school. One of our students (Lily) really wanted to go to Vanderbilt. She had great scores, very solid grades, and had done additional research on the Classics as a hobby. She was a desirable, well-rounded candidate to anyone who was paying attent ion. But Lily wasn’t super social. She grew up in the northeast, was close to her parents, and wanted to stay close by. When we met Lily, we asked her why she had zeroed in on Vanderbilt so quickly. Simply put, she had heard it was a respected school. After a lot of talking and some soul-searching, Lily decided that, although she hadn’t initially thought of it as the kind of well-renowned university she always thought she should attend, Vassar was a better choice for her.Instead of focusing on the singular factor of rank, we recommend focusing on the environment of a place and the other factors that would make you want to live at a university for four years. Are you into the idea of a rural setting or a city? Do you want a big school or a small school? Are you thinking of participating in Greek life? Are sports a part of your weekend vibe? Would you rather be able to take a train home, or are you okay flying several hours? Like dating, you should figure out your likes and dislik es and then say, “hey. I want it that way.”Surrender Your Heart, Body, and Soul…and Test Scores  Once you hone in on your list of target schools, it’s time to face the music and see if you’re actually a good fit. It’s easy to say that you don’t care who you are, where you’re from, what you did, as long as the admissions committee lets you in, but the fact of the matter is, they are going to care about who YOU are. So, even if you’re original and you’re the only one, your test scores still matter. Compare your test scores to each school’s average and see if you make the cut.Four Fast Rules: Choose four to five target schools Enough said.Diversify your type of targets While we do recommend evaluating what kind of environment is ideal for you, you could also be happy in multiple types of environments. If it works for you, apply to both small and large schools. A lot happens in the time between when you apply and when you actually matriculate. If you’re on the f ence about going to a school with no sports teams, consider that in a few months, you might not care about having sports at all. Give yourself the option. If there’s one you really love, apply early decisionWe know it can feel like you’re leaving your life in their hands, but just take the leap.Don’t be surprised if you get rejected. Colleges care about yield rates. A school knows based on your grades and scores whether or not they are your target, your reach, or your safety. So, if they are a target or a safety for you, they may actually defer or waitlist you and instead, offer that spot to someone with slightly worse grades or schools. If you get deferred, don’t panic. The school probably just wants to see a deferral letter.    Stuck on crafting your list of target schools? Call us. We offer a personalized program to help our students apply to the perfect schools for them.

It is the main strength upon which future predictions are to be planned. The share of GRP in Gross State Product is also a strength which is the greatest positive asset considering the increased rate of unemployment. Weakness: Increase rate of unemployment is a major weakness which needs to taken into consideration. The creation of secondary industry like retail, construction can act as counter measure to check the unemployment rate. Low rate of education is also linked with the unemployment. Opportunities: Creating secondary sector of employment generation to check the rate of unemployment is an opportunity. Developing resource planning will be helpful in selecting the potential areas of the council. Focussing on awareness about the low rate of employment as a factor of less educated people in council can be an opportunity which will serve dual purpose. Threats: The rate of migration is a threat which has resulted in increase rate of unemployment, checking the migration of those who go out for work and for those who come to work are both of primary importance. Policy level understanding should be made to intervene in minimizing the threats. The Influence and Accomplishments of Thomas Aquinas and...

The two philosophers I will be discussing in this paper are Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) and G.W. Leibniz (1646-1716). Thomas Aquinas was born outside of Rome in what is now Italy. He was heavily influenced by Aristotle and developed his own. Talk about accomplishments.. Thomas Aquinas theorizes that creation is not complete even once some â€Å"thing† has been created completely. He argues that creation is an ongoing process and depends on God for every moment it continues. He elaborates on this by describing God as creation itself, and not necessarily as a formed entity. If we can see God in this way then we possess the undeniable proof that we as mankind were created by God, making us, humanity, the irrefutable objective evidence that God exists. Aquinas continues to say creation will continue for as long as God exists, that amount of time being eternity, so we can also assume that creation will also forever be in motion. Among the many of the human qualities bestowed by people on to God, Aquinas proclaims that God is good. God encompasses all that which is good and just in all of creation throughout this universe. For us this means that believing good exists, having a sense of morality, and living with compassion dictates qualifies that Go d must exist. Aquinas does not believe that God is a simple entity with only a few parts. He goes on to explain the importance of this idea by explaining that if God were simple, it would mean God could be undone by something lesser than

Feminism Essays (716 words) - Gender Studies,

Feminism What is feminism? By general definition, feminism is a philosophy in which women and their contributions are valued. It is based on social, political and economical equality for women. Feminists can be anyone in the population, men, women, girl or boys. Feminism can also be described as a movement. A revolution that includes women and men who wish the world to be equal without boundaries. These boundaries or blockades are better known as discrimination and biases against gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status and economic status. Everyone views the world with his or her own sense of gender and equality. Feminists view the world as being unequal. They wish to see the gender gap and the idea that men are superior to women decreased or even abolished. Carol Gilligan is one woman who has contributed much time and effort to the feminist theory. Her beliefs and ideas are based upon difference feminism. In this essay I will tie the ideas and beliefs of Carol Gilligan with informati on from our text, the packet read in class and the book, Faces of Feminism. Carol Gilligan is a lecturer and assistant professor at Harvard University as well as a psychologist. She has many theories that deal with moral reasoning and development. In her influential book In a Different Voice, she sets forth the idea that women make decisions according to a criteria of ethics of care and that men make decisions according to an ethic of rights.(3) In her book, Carol Gilligan also disagrees with Lawrence Kohlbergs' theory, which suggests that Few people matured fully in their moral reasoning...but women hardly ever did.(2) In her opposition Gilligan stated that women make moral decisions according to different but equally mature and morally upright reasoning.(2) She feels that women are different because they posses a different hereditary set of values and beliefs. This opposition to Kohlberg's theory was backed by research. Even though there was research done to support Gilligan, it s eemed to have experimenter bias. It was not an open or strong experiment and it only observed the actions of the white middle class. This did not give a clear or objective view on the separate criteria of women and men. The views and ideas on moral reasoning and development set forth by Carol Gilligan are those of many difference feminists.Difference feminism is just one type of feminism. It gives a concept that women should go back to traditional roles(3) set by society. It also states that gender is natural and is not learned by the society in which one lives. Not all Feminists agree with this theory but there are many feminists, such as Carol Gilligan who agree with this idea that even though men and women are different, they each have their own separate place in society. Difference feminism is successful because it tells people what they want to hear: women really are different in just the ways that we always thought. ... And men have power, wealth and control of social resource s because women do not really want them.(3) This idea of difference feminism sets forth a number of stereotypes. They give feminists and the general public a skewed view of the theory behind the philosophy. In the book Faces of Feminism, feminist theorists were asked, Do women have to be the same as men to be equal?(1) The majority of responses were yes. It is believed that in order for women and men to become equal, society must unlearn and uncondition(1) the gender roles and standards it has established throughout history. Society and the people in it have set up the basis for gender difference and now many feminists are breaking down those barriers. Carol Gilligans position on moral development and her views as a feminist, suggest that womens nature is not something to be replaced, but something to be maintained, indeed celebrated, for the sake both of women and society.(1) This view is tied in with the general definition of feminism, that women should be valued for their accomplishments. Womanhood is important and should be celebrated and praised. On that same note, maleness must also be celebrated and praised. Bibliography NONE Social Issues

Privacy vs. Justice essays

Privacy vs. Justice essays The events of September 11th came as a great shock to everyone, save the terrorists who were responsible for what occurred that morning. However, it was a series of events that could not be stopped a situation that suddenly arose from the crisp, early morning air over New York and forever changed people all over the world. A great many people lost family members, friends, and loved ones that morning however, a question even greater than that loss of life also ascended from the events of that day more than a year ago. As I shuffled through my daily routine for the remainder of that week and heard news of airports resuming traffic under enormously tightened security, I wondered to myself something then that is still very much on my mind today: will the freedom and diversity that have made the United States a shining light amongst the other countries of the world be put on the chopping block because of the events of September 11th? There is no argument against the fact that the events of September 11th were the worst abuse of American freedoms in the past hundred years, or in the history of the country. It is for this reason that many people who sit in places of power and control the direction of this country have and will be incredibly tempted to restrict valuable freedoms such as the abilities to travel spontaneously, keep private matters confidential, and to speak freely and anonymously that we as normal Americans possess. Greater pressure will soon be brought on the people who develop communica tions mediums to include unconstitutional surveillance devices and methods in communications networks and trade mediums that such things should not exist across. It is things like this that make me wonder how Americans will react to the policies that have and will undoubtedly be put in place in regards to September 11th, 2001. It is my personal fear that the people of this country will be slowly led to accept policy that at ...

Islame - Essay Example The Holy Quran addresses the concept of leadership and gives an Islamic view about how God sees human beings. One of the critical characteristics of good leadership emphasized by the Holy Quran is the issue of teamwork. â€Å"Bring me blocks of iron.† At length when he had filled up the space between the two steep mountainsides he said â€Å"Blow (with your bellows).† Then when he had made it (red) as fire, he said, â€Å"Bring me that I may pour over it molten lead.† (Quran, 18:96). On the other hand, one of the most important Hadiths about leadership is when the Prophet opined, â€Å"Each of you is a shepherd, and all of you are responsible for your flocks.† (Saheeh Al-Bukhari, Saheeh Muslim) The verse and the Hadith have critical significance and relevance for Muslims in contemporary context. With the current global political, social and economic challenges, one will ask what Islam’s position is on leadership. From the verse and the Hadith, it is clear than teamwork forms an important characteristic of good leadership. According to the verse teamwork create unity of purpose and makes people

American Government and Politics Today Research Paper

American Government and Politics Today - Research Paper Example However some proponents support the electoral college as a good system and therefore need no reform. This essay explores the proponents’ arguments for electoral college Reforms and why some people think it should not be reformed. Electoral College Reform The system of electing the presidents through the use of an electoral college is considered an outdated mechanism of an electoral process, and therefore need to be reformed. It is seen to deny the citizens the voice to choose a leader of their choice as the selected group forming the electoral colleges that represent the larger group may be compromised and not elect the leader who is popular with the rest of citizens (Formisano 193). It is also prone to interference by the independent candidates. It should therefore be reformed and replaced by a system of direct election of a presidential candidate with an instant runoff if the clear winner is not produced. This will give every citizen a chance to vote and elect a leader of th eir choice. The electoral college system also needs a reform in order to replace it with a system where the electorate are allowed to vote directly with a popularity rule system where every voter will be given an opportunity to cast one vote for a preferred candidate. The candidate who gets the most votes will be declared the automatic winner. This system is seen to reflect the will of the people as opposed to the Electoral College system where voting is a representation of third parties. Direct voting system will also eliminate the Electoral College’s system that essentially dilutes the votes of the people as it is prone to compromise and betrayal by the third parties. The Electoral College system needs to be reformed to such an extent as to be replaced with a system that is democratic; one that reflects the people’s wishes. This is because with the Electoral College system which in some cases involves maximization of power by assigning all the representative votes to the winner with most votes is so undemocratic. This in most cases result in a situation where a candidate who wins the nationwide popular votes, still looses in an electoral college. This has been witnessed in the United States elections in recent years (Stromberg 769). The electoral college system only see presidential candidates concentrate on key vote battle grounds, this makes them consider only the interests of a few voters found on those key states ignoring other states. It should therefore be replaced with the direct popular voting system where the candidates are forced to carry out vigorous campaigns across the whole country. This will promote democracy and allow for equal participation across the country. It will also promote high voter turn-outs and eliminate voter apathy associated with the electoral colleges system. This is because voters will be assured that their votes make a difference in choosing the candidate of their choice. However, reforming the electoral system is arguably a bad idea according to Rohwer (215). The proponent of the electoral college system argue that the system avoids the instance of a presidential run off. In many instances a winner is declared as soon as the result shows that the candidate has the majority votes as the provisional results in most cases are ignored. The direct popular system of election is also seen to interfere with the federal system of

Social Consequences of Inequality

Social Consequences of Inequality Inequality is a feature of my country, (the UK), however, it is of little social consequence. Discuss. Introduction Inequality in society means that some people are at a disadvantage compared to others. In the UK inequalities are featured in a number of different contexts. Women for example are socially disadvantaged in comparison to men and ethnic minorities are often disadvantaged in comparison to the dominant white community because they may not have the same opportunities. There are also class inequalities in Britain where those from a working class background are often disadvantaged compared to people from a middle-class background (Giddens, 2001). This assignment will discuss the statement that inequality is a feature of the UK and assess the view that it is of little social consequence, this will be done with reference to class and gender inequalities in health. Class Inequalities Those who belong to the higher capitalist classes and to the middle classes tend to be better educated than people from a working class background. This often means that the higher classes have greater material resources than those from a lower class. Having more money means that people also have greater access to other resources. They tend to fare better when it comes to education and to health because they live in better areas which tend to have less crowded and better performing schools (Giddens, 2001). The working classes tend to have more stressful, or more physically demanding jobs that pay less money than, for example, teaching or being the manager of a successful business. This means that they often cannot afford the same kind of diet as those who earn more money and live in a better area. This puts them at a disadvantage in terms of how healthy they are and how long they might expect to live (Walsh et al, 2000). Such inequalities do not simply occur as a result of class ineq ualities but in areas where people do not have the same equality of opportunity. Since the late nineteen sixties feminists such as Walby (1990) have pointed to the fact that in a capitalist society women do not have the same access to material or other social resources and that this is due to the gender inequalities which exist in a patriarchal society. Gender Inequalities Britain is a patriarchal society. In patriarchal societies women are seen as the subordinate sex. Patriarchy is bound up with traditional notions of the family where the father was seen as the head of the family unit. This, feminists say, can be seen in all the structures of patriarchal societies where laws and social structures operate in such a way as to benefit men at the expense of women (Walby, 1990). Since the nineteenth century the traditional family has been one where the man goes to work and the woman stays at home and looks after the house and any children in the family. Walby (1990) argues that this arrangement made women invisible and their labour in the home, which allowed men to have a public life, has not been taken into account. With the rise of feminism and the struggle for equal opportunities for women the situation has changed somewhat and many women now work outside the home. Work does not readjust the gender imbalances that exist in British society because in mos t jobs women still earn less than men. Walby (1990) has argued that gender is a primary category when it comes to inequaltity and the oppression of women. State policies may no longer aim to keep women in the home but have done little to alleviate the inequalities between women and men in the public sphere. Certain occupations such as teaching, nursing, shop or clerical work are still regarded as women’s work. Although women may now be involved in the public sphere and can be found in the labour market in increasing numbers, Walby states that they still remain segregated from wealth, power and status. Doyal (1995) has said that research shows that while paid work brings benefits to a family it can also bring extra stresses and responsibilities. These may then affect women’s health. The increasing number of roles that women are called upon to play in contemporary society affects their emotional, mental and physical well being. Class, Gender, and Health For some time there has been concern over the fact that there appear to be inequalities in health provision and the ways in which this impacts on people’s lives. As a result of this sociologists look the body, or aspects of the body and the ways in which factors such as class, race and gender affect a person’s experience of health (Giddens, 2001).The Acheson Report (1998) pointed out that health inequalities are complex, certainly more than people had previously believed. Material deprivation alone is not the cause of inequalities in health, rather there are wider cultural and economic factors which interact with personal choices based on psychological and biological influences. Acheson recommended that a wider range of intervention and policy initiatives would be needed to address health inequalities. Many commentators believe that class inequalities in health have worsened over the last twenty five years with the introduction of market forces into healthcare i.e. oper ating the health system as though it were a business (Giddens, 2001). This particularly affects those people at the lower end of the class scale because facilities in poorer areas are often over stretched and therefore people may have to wait longer for the care they need. Women in Britain tend to use the health services a lot more than their male counterparts. This is explained in terms of women generally living longer than men, having more chronic illnesses and generally being the main care giver and child rearer in the family (Provincial Health Officer’s Report, 1995). Feminists such as Abbott and Wallace (1997) point out that what is often missed is that women will also visit the doctor on behalf of another family member. Feminists also point out that because there is no specific health care policy for women the processes of menstruation, childbirth and the menopause are over medicalised. Are These Inequalities of Social Consequence? Clearly there are class and gender inequalities which are endemic to society in the United Kingdom and this results in inequalities in other areas of social life such as health. It might be argued that these inequalities do have social consequences. Class inequalities in health for example can result in working class members of society suffering from greater ill health and dying prematurely. The results of this could mean a shortage of workers in jobs that are not usually held by people from other classes it could also mean that the working class are more of a burden on the health system than their middle class counterparts. These things could have much wider social consequences, a shortage of services, in the construction industry for example, and a shortage of hospital beds in some areas. Similarly gender inequalities could also have wider social consequences. If women do not have sufficient access to health services then they may not be healthy enough to take care of other members of the family. Conclusion Clearly there are inequalities in this country and it would certainly appear that these inequalities may not seem to be of great social consequence but if they are left to carry on unaddressed could have wider ramifications. The introduction of the Community Care Act in 1990 for example relies on family members to take care of those people who may not be able to look after themselves as a result of mental health problems, or simply due to age. Members of the upper and middle classes may well have the resources to pay for care but working class people do not. If health inequalities are not addressed then there may be no-one who is fit enough to look after those people who are unable to look after themselves. This could have serious consequences for the health system, the benefits system, and Government policy making in general. 1250 words Bibliography Abbott and Wallace, 1997 An Introduction to Sociology: Feminist Perspectives. China and Tibet Essay -- History Politics Government Essays

China and Tibet - Historical Territorial Integrity, Rights to Self-Determination, and The Anatomy of Compromise â€Å"The issue involved is the extinction of the people, the Tibetan People†¦No sir, what I have in mind is the extinction of the Tibetans as a distinct people, with its traditions, its own way of life and its own type of religion.† Tsiang, China’s Permanent UN Representative, 1953 â€Å"The Communist have, for the past 50 years, imposed their revolution upon unwilling Tibetan peasants and nomads, and have ruled Tibet by threat, or often the actual use, of force. The debate has been unable to reach any sort of international consensus because of the difficult legal and historical views. China insists that they have sovereignty over Tibet, as the Tibetan Plateau has been within its boundaries for over seven hundred years. Jaydens Rescue Alternative Ending Essay

â€Å"Well, AFGOI it’ll have to be,† said Alex. â€Å"That’s all we have. I just hope it’ll put Rechner away†¦Ã¢â‚¬ â€Å"Next time we will see him we will all say AFGOI at once,† suggested Vanessa. They waited patiently to see the evil Rechner again so they could use the magic word to free Jayden. Several days went by and the time was passing very quickly at camp. Every day was full of activities. At the end of the week Sam, Vanessa, and Alex all decided to go sailing because of the water skiing accident. Alex did not want to water ski again. Neither did Vanessa after what happened to Alex last time. They kept wondering when Rechner would appear again. After spending time on the lake, it began to rain cats and dogs. They ran for shelter under a pavilion and were glad that they were off of the sailboat. Sam said, â€Å"Why don’t we head towards our cabin and call it a night.† Alex and Vanessa agreed. They began their long trek to reach the cabin. The ground was very soggy and muddy and they all got their shoes extremely dirty. They were all happy to hit the hay for a good night’s sleep. Their counselor stayed up to watch them to make sure they didn’t leave again. In the morning their counselor was exhausted so he let the campers sleep longer than usual. When they awoke, they all were starving and their entire cabin headed to go eat. After breakfast Alex, Vanessa, and Sam went back to the cabin to brush their teeth and that is when the evil Rechner finally appeared. All three of them said AFGOI at once and Rechner said, â€Å"Okay I give up and you win. Jayden gets to go back to her palace.† Alex, Vanessa, and Sam couldn’t believe what they just heard. Everyone that lived in Idyllia was so happy to have the Emerald Queen back. They pushed nine hundred dollars out of the book. Alex, Vanessa, and Sam were so excited because Jayden was now safe and they each had three hundred dollars. They were finally done with Rechner once and for all! Jayden’s Rescue Written By: Vladimir Tumanov Project by: Schmo went through 2 green lights. Mane went through 1 red light. Torch went through 3 yellow lights. This is 6 lights in all (2+1+3). Then they repeated the same path so 6+6= 12 lights passed. Torch went through 3 yellow lights twice so 3+3 = 6. Each ticket was $300 so 6 lights times $300 is $1,800. He only had $100 bills so you need to divide $1,800 by $100 and you get 18. Torch passed 4 ponds which each had a duck. These 4 ducks bit his hand each one time and each bite caused 4 red bumps. So 4 bites times 4 red bumps each is 4 x 4 which equals 16 red bumps.

Even though you may think you can succeed without a plan, every decision made will either help or hinder success because all actions have consequences and people who take personal responsibility succeed. Success to one person is not always the same to another, we all have our own definitions of success. To some, success may mean money and wealth. To others good health. To one it may mean a great job or doing a job they love. And to another a great family and home life. Whatever our definition of success, it is important to find out what the means to you.
